Alan was one of that special breed who gave his entire professional life to the service of his country, for whose future he cared deeply. But his seriousness didn't prevent him from being a terrific companion with whom no conversation was ever without its barrowload of laughs. Rightly he took great pride in what he had made of his life chances and the family he had built together with Anne. I miss him very much.
